Murfreesboro, TN - The Murfreesboro City Council will convene tonight, Thursday, July 17, for a scheduled public hearing to discuss the proposed annexation of Middle Point Landfill. The session will include community input and council deliberations on the matter. Tonight’s public hearing will be held at City Hall, located at 111 West Vine Street, in downtown Murfreesboro. The meeting kicks off at 6:00 p.m., and the public comment session begins at 5:30 p.m. if you’ve signed up to speak.
Ahead of the meeting, Middle Point Landfill’s operators issued a statement reaffirming their long-standing stance:
“Middle Point Landfill does not oppose annexation and has not opposed annexation since 1995, when our business entered a contract with the city to access sewer and water services.”
They emphasized that the potential annexation will not affect their staff or operations in Rutherford County. According to the statement, under existing agreements and communications with the city, the landfill will continue its activities uninterrupted.
Middle Point Landfill remains under the oversight of the Tennessee Department of Environment and Conservation and the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency. Annexation, according to the company, will not change the city’s regulatory authority over its operations.
