MURFREESBORO, Tenn. (WGNS) — Rutherford County District 3 Commissioner Michael Wrather officially submitted his resignation, effective this Friday, marking the end of his service on the County Commission after nearly seven years.
Wrather, who was elected in 2018, has played a key role in several county initiatives, including the construction of public safety and health buildings and the development of two new schools. He also served on the Public Safety Committee as vice chair and was recognized for his contributions toward managing growth and infrastructure in both District 3 and across Rutherford County. Committee Chairman Pettus Read:
Commission Chair Jeff Phillips had some encouraging words for the outgoing commissioner:
With the seat now vacant, the Commission began outlining the formal process to appoint a replacement to serve until the next general election. Although state law typically requires official notice from the county clerk to begin that process, commissioners voted to waive the requirement, given that the resignation was announced during the commission meeting.
To expedite the process, commissioners also voted to adjust the typical timeline for applications. Rather than requiring them a week ahead of the steering committee meeting, applications will now be accepted up until Friday, August 1—just days before the August 4 Steering Committee meeting, chaired by Commissioner Craig Harris.
The Steering Committee will review submitted applications and forward its recommendation to the full County Commission. However, nominations can still be made from the floor during the full Commission meeting in August, regardless of whether an applicant was reviewed by the committee.
Interested candidates should contact the County Mayor’s Office to receive and submit their application. For questions about eligibility—including residency requirements—applicants may reach out to County Election Administrator Alan Farley or the County Attorney’s office for guidance.
