Highways & High-Tech: Murfreesboro Tackles Crime with Real-Time Policing Power

Jul 21, 2025 at 02:56 pm by WGNS

Murfreesboro, TN - Murfreesboro and Rutherford County are facing a multi-layered crime challenge—not only due to the growing homeless population, but also because of the region’s intricate web of interstates. Officials report that with I-840 linking us to three major interstates.  Plus, I-24 alone is a direct connection to Chicago, these super-highways allow criminals to move in and out of the area with startling speed.

High Tech Stops The Bad Guys

Mayor Shane McFarland weighed-in, saying...

It’s not just who’s here. It’s how easy it is to get here—and disappear.

With law enforcement agencies using high-technology, criminals have a hard time flying under the radar here in Murfreesboro. In fact, the Murfreesboro Police Department has taken a major leap into the future with its cutting-edge Real Time Crime Center, a surveillance and analytics hub designed to track suspects and respond to incidents faster than ever before.

The mayor continued...

“This system? It’s the cat’s meow when it comes to catching the bad guys.”

Despite concerns from privacy advocates and skeptics wary of "Big Brother" surveillance, local leaders stress that technology is a tool for safety, not spying.

Mayor McFarland responded to critics...

“This isn’t about watching everybody—it’s about finding the few who threaten the many.”

Residents are hopeful that real-time policing will help protect “the Heart of Tennessee,” keeping families safe while addressing the deeper causes of crime across the region.
