MURFREESBORO, TN — The City of Murfreesboro is pushing forward with the ambitious Town Creek restoration project, with the primary portion of the construction expected to continue for another 12 to 14 months. Assistant City Manager Sam Huddleston told WGNS News that the core structure of the revitalized creek and much of the landscaping will be completed by fall 2026…
It all began above ground in the 1950’s, but a mixture of growth, flooding and the state’s need for an extended roadway system, led to the creek being placed into culverts. Huddleston stated… Town Creek, a stream that has long flowed beneath the city in aging culverts for the past 75-years, will be “daylighted” as part of Phase II of the project. The restored creek will stretch visibly from Murfree Spring behind the Discovery Center to Cannonsburgh Village, where it empties into Lytle Creek.
The redevelopment will also establish vital pedestrian and biking connectivity between the Discovery Center, Cannonsburgh Village, and the larger Greenway Trail System.
A central component of the project includes a new pedestrian bridge over Broad Street. The bridge, a concept born from the Historic Bottoms Planning Study, will link the historic downtown square to the revitalized area known as “The Bottoms.” This safe pedestrian route is expected to transform the area by supporting environmental goals, replacing deteriorated stormwater infrastructure, and sparking economic redevelopment in the downtown corridor.
