NHC--a 54 year Legacy of Compassion, Innovation, and Community

Jul 25, 2025 at 03:57 am by WGNS

Murfreesboro, TN - July marks the 54th anniversary of Murfreesboro headquartered National HealthCare Corporation (NHC). Founded in 1971 by visionary physician Dr. Carl E. Adams, NHC has grown into a nationally recognized leader in senior healthcare, with services spanning 11 states—primarily across the Southeast. What began as a bold dream now stands tall both figuratively and literally: the 15-story NHC building off Murfreesboro’s historic square is more than a landmark—it’s a testament to care, innovation, and the enduring power of a heartfelt mission.

Today, NHC’s legacy is shepherded by a passionate leadership team that remains faithful to its founding ideals. At the helm is Board Chair Robert G. Adams, son of Dr. Adams, whose stewardship ensures the organization never loses sight of its roots. Alongside him, CEO Steve Flatt and President and COO Mike Ussery guide the company forward—driving innovation while reinforcing a culture centered on care, quality, and integrity. Together, this team continues to refine and elevate the services NHC offers—from rehabilitation to long-term skilled nursing—to meet the evolving needs of older adults.

Dr. Adams and Jennie Mae's Dream

At the heart of this milestone is AdamsPlace, born from the founding vision of Dr. Adams and his wife, Jennie Mae. The couple dreamed of creating a "campus concept"—a place where seniors could receive every level of care as they aged, while continuing to live with freedom, dignity, and love. That dream took shape on the grounds of AdamsPlace, and today it remains a beacon for elder care nationwide.

The Dream Continues at AdamsPlace

AdamsPlace' Executive Director Terri Deal, who leads the community with warmth and dedication, has breathed new life into this vision. Through events like the fun-filled “Ride ’N Slide” waterslide celebration, water fitness sessions in the indoor salt-water pool, and daily music gatherings--AdamsPlace is filled with laughter, movement, and connection.

“We’re not just offering services,” Terri explains, “We’re creating a lifestyle that honors every stage of life.”

AdamsPlace isn’t just a place to live—it’s a place to thrive. The stately oak trees offer shaded serenity for reflective walks and casual strolls, while the expansive library provides intellectual nourishment and quiet escape with every turn of the page. It’s where stories bloom indoors and nature whispers just beyond the windows.

Residents stay active and engaged through thoughtfully curated hobby events—from painting and gardening to music appreciation and fitness classes. There’s transportation for shopping trips, medical appointments, and social outings, so daily needs are met with ease and dignity.

Whether it’s sipping sweet tea beneath the canopy of those oaks or discovering a new favorite author in the library, AdamsPlace fosters a sense of belonging. It’s where wellness meets joy and every comfort is considered—not just a home, but a vibrant, caring community.

These stories are the heartbeat of NHC and AdamsPlace, where age is celebrated and compassion is woven into every interaction.

Thank You Dr. Carl and Jennie Mae

As Dr. Adams once said, “Nobody knows the quantity of their life… What I’m most interested in is the quality.”

That legacy continues today—echoing in the voices of caregivers, the steps of morning walkers, and the joy of music drifting through the gardens. Here’s to 54 years of visionary care. And to the dream of Carl and Jennie Mae Adams—still thriving, still inspiring, and still changing lives. This milestone is a celebration of the lives touched, the hearts lifted, and the dream that still resonates in every hallway, conversation, and moment of joy.

From Murfreesboro to the greater Southeast, NHC continues to stand as a symbol of visionary leadership, community connection, and the promise that aging can be embraced with grace. Here's to the dream that became a legacy—and the legacy that continues to shape lives.
