Murfreesboro, TN - This Friday (8/1/2025) marks the end of an era in Murfreesboro as Assistant City Manager Sam Huddleston retires after more than two decades of dedicated service. Known for his encyclopedic memory, unwavering integrity, and deep love for the Heart of Tennessee, Huddleston leaves behind a legacy that’s hard to match.

Huddleston began his career with the City of Murfreesboro in 1999 as an Environmental Engineer. Over the years, he steadily rose through the ranks—becoming Assistant City Engineer in 2015, Executive Director of Development Services in 2018, and finally Assistant City Manager for Engineering and Economic Development in 2023. His work touched nearly every corner of city planning, from stormwater and floodplain management to community development and strategic growth initiatives.

City Manager Darren Gore, speaking on WGNS’ Action Line, summed up the sentiment shared by many: “We’ll never have another Sam Huddleston, but we are searching now for the best candidate.” Gore’s words reflect the challenge of replacing someone whose knowledge and leadership have become foundational to Murfreesboro’s operations.

Colleagues often marvel at Huddleston’s photographic memory—he could recall project details, regulations, and historical context without ever needing to consult a computer. But it wasn’t just his intellect that made him indispensable. Sam was known for his encouraging spirit, his willingness to go the extra mile, and his honest, straightforward approach. Whether the answer was easy or hard to hear, Sam always delivered it with clarity and care.

Murfreesboro Mayor Shane McFarland commented, "Sam is and will continue to be a tireless advocate for the City of Murfreesboro.  Sam’s passion for service, putting residents first and his faith was something that guided him daily.  I am proud of Sam and honored to have worked with him.  I am more honored to call him a friend."

Dr. James Norris, pastor of Franklin Road Baptist Church, said, "I am honored to be Sam Huddleston’s Pastor during most of his tenure with the City of Murfreesboro. Sam brings the same spirit and expertise to the table as he serves in his local church! Thank you for honoring him with this splendid article. We all wish him the best in the days ahead. Congratulations Sam!

A native of Middle Tennessee, Huddleston made Murfreesboro his home in 1991. He holds both a B.S. and M.S. in Civil Engineering from Tennessee Tech and is a licensed professional engineer. Before joining the city, he spent 11 years in private environmental consulting, serving regional and national clients.

Retired City Recorder, Treasurer, Finance Director Melissa Wright said, "Sam always had a ready smile and was interested in finding a solution to problems that benefit both the City and the taxpayer or developer of a project. He always took the time to listen to a concern and see if he could help resolve it. He clearly found joy in doing things that would bring a smile to the face of his fellow co-workers, whether they were under his supervision or not, like surprise breakfast treats or ice cream treats on a hot day."

Retired engineer Logan Hickerson noted, "Sam always tried to be helpful and supportive. He focused on finding a solution. That attitude will certainly be missed!"

As Murfreesboro prepares to say goodbye to one of its most respected public servants, the community reflects on the impact of a man who never stopped striving to make his city better. Sam Huddleston’s retirement may mark the end of his official duties, but his influence will continue to shape Murfreesboro for years to come.
