Rutherford County Transfer Station Diverts 8,000 Tons from Landfill in First Month, Generates $653K in Fees

RUTHERFORD COUNTY, Tenn. (WGNS) – Rutherford County’s new transfer station has wrapped up a highly successful first month of operation, processing 7,965 tons of solid waste and generating $653,797 in tipping fees for July. Of that amount, $66,616 will support the ongoing operations of the Solid Waste Department.

The new facility, located at 6000 Landfill Road in Murfreesboro, is helping reduce the environmental burden on the local landfill by redirecting nearly 400 tons of solid waste per day. Customers now benefit from an average turnaround time under 15 minutes, smoother access via newly paved roads, and reduced wear on tires and equipment.

During a Public Works Committee meeting, Rutherford County Mayor Joe Carr and Solid Waste Director Bishop Wagener presented the positive results alongside team members.

“This success doesn’t surprise me,” said Mayor Carr. “I used my startup business experience—having founded multiple multimillion-dollar companies—to guide this process. Despite early opposition, we’re now well on our way to solid waste independence. This is what winning looks like.”

Carr also credited departments including Solid Waste, Information Technology (led by CIO Cody York), and the Highway Department (led by Superintendent Greg Brooks) for their collaboration.

District 2 County Commissioner Steve Pearcy, whose district houses the facility, echoed Carr’s enthusiasm.

“Almost 8,000 tons were kept off the Walter Hill landfill in just one month,” Pearcy said. “You can’t put a price on what that means to the community.”

Feedback from the public has been overwhelmingly positive. William Shackelford, owner of Trash Pandy LLC, praised the facility, calling July “the best month ever” for his company.

Director Wagener added:

“This success is a testament to what dedicated professionals can accomplish when working as a team.”

The 12,500-square-foot facility, which took 22 months to build and was completed under budget at $17 million, is designed to prepare solid waste for final transport, reducing strain on the county’s landfill and supporting future recycling and composting efforts.
