Friday: 1st Full Day of School--Team focus on Preparadness and Awareness

Aug 07, 2025 at 02:51 pm by WGNS

Murfreesboro, TN - Friday, August 8, 2025 is the first FULL DAY of school for both Murfreesboro City Schools as well as the Rutherford County School system. As students return to classrooms, police and SRO's focus is not just to academics but safety as well. Drivers are reminded to slow down in school zones, stay alert, and keep phones tucked away. Children can dart into traffic unexpectedly, and a moment’s distraction could have serious consequences.

Taining and Security

The Murfreesboro Police Department is doubling down on its commitment to school security, especially in a world where the definition of “normal” has changed. This week, the department’s School Safety Division hosted an active shooter and active aggressor tabletop training for several private schools, including Middle Tennessee Christian School, Franklin Road Christian School, Saint Rose of Lima Catholic School, and ICM Academy.

The training sessions are designed to build stronger partnerships between law enforcement and educators, helping schools prepare for emergencies that, while unthinkable, must be considered. Teachers and staff worked through scenarios with officers, learning how to respond swiftly and effectively should a crisis arise.

Time Are Changing

Today’s schools are navigating a landscape far different from what it was even ten years ago. Technology, social media, and shifting societal norms have reshaped how students learn and interact. Educators are constantly balancing tradition with innovation, trying to meet students where they are — often through screens and apps — while still fostering meaningful, in-person connections.

The Murfreesboro Police Department recognizes that these changes affect not just education, but safety. Their training programs aim to equip schools with the tools and mindset needed to respond to the unknown. It’s a proactive approach in a reactive world, and one that reflects a growing understanding: keeping students safe requires more than just locked doors and security cameras. It takes preparation, collaboration, and a community-wide commitment to vigilance.

Thanks to the dedicated collaboration between area law enforcement agences and educators, for working to prepare our youth for tomorrow--while keeping them safe today!
