UPDATE: More than 4,100-miles from Murfreesboro, The Cripple Creek Cloggers, accompanied by the Slim Chance Band of Rutherford County, are proudly representing Middle Tennessee at the first international folk festival ever hosted by the city of Leiria, Portugal. The troupe has already performed alongside groups from Ecuador, Slovakia, and regions of Portugal, with additional troupes from around the world set to join as the festival continues.
From the stage, the Cloggers share the rich tradition of Appalachian square dance, preserving a uniquely American folk form while connecting with cultures abroad. Audiences have responded with enthusiasm, celebrating the energy and storytelling carried through the dance and songs.
Beyond the stage, the group has experienced Portuguese culture—visiting Castelo de Leiria, a medieval fortress overlooking the city; exploring the surf town of Nazaré on the Atlantic coast; enjoying local cuisine featuring fresh seafood, pork, and vegetables; and making a meaningful visit to the world-renowned religious site at Fátima. In every setting, the troupe has been welcomed warmly, including by local dignitaries, mayors, and business leaders.
“This has been a chance not only to perform, but to exchange culture in both directions,” said Sarah Harris, Slim Chance Band's fiddle player from Eagleville. “From Tennessee to Portugal, dance continues to be a bridge between people.”
The Cloggers will continue performing throughout the festival, sending photos, videos, and updates in near real time to share the journey with the community back home.
