RUTHERFORD COUNTY, TN – For those of us who still depend on gasoline instead of zipping around in silent Teslas, the rollercoaster ride at the pump continues. As of Tuesday (09/02/2025), Tennessee now ranks at number 6 in the nation for low gas prices, with regular unleaded holding steady at $2.77 ($2.778) per gallon. We’re just a hair more expensive than Texas, which sits at $2.77 ($2.770). So, a BIG congratulations is due for Tennessee, after you've managed to be only eight-hundredths of a penny less affordable than the Lone Star State.
Here in Rutherford County, AAA reports that drivers are shelling out the same $2.77 average, which feels like a victory… until you take a quick trip south to Shelbyville, where gas is 5-cents cheaper at $2.72. Meanwhile, Nashville drivers are forking over $2.84 per gallon, which almost makes Rutherford County fuel prices look like a bargain. Almost.
If you happen to live in or travel to Williamson County, however, brace yourself. There, regular unleaded is an eye-watering $3.12 per gallon. For pickup owners, that means you’re spending $78 to fill up a 25-gallon tank — or $8.75 more than you’d spend in Murfreesboro, Smyrna, or LaVergne. Consider it the “luxury tax” of living in Brentwood and Franklin area.
East of Rutherford County, Woodbury is clocking in at $2.84, while Coffee County is holding the line at $2.73 per gallon.
And if you’re wondering where to move for cheap gas, the state of Mississippi is your winner at $2.71 per gallon. Arkansas and Oklahoma round out the top three with prices hovering just below Tennessee’s.
PREMIUM GRADE GAS: Now, for those driving something that requires premium fuel — because why not complicate your life — Tennessee sits at $3.63 a gallon, ranking us 11th cheapest in the country for 92 Octane or above. South Carolina somehow beat us by a penny, proving that every cent really does count when you’re crying at the pump.
Of course, no gas report would be complete without mentioning California and Hawaii, where filling up might require a co-signer. Californians are paying $4.61 for regular unleaded, while premium is a painful $5.01. Hawaii isn’t far behind at $4.45 (Reg) and $4.95 (Pre). Washington State rounds out the expensive trio, with regular gas at $4.39 and premium at $4.86 / gallon. At this point, maybe they should consider selling gas by the thimble.
DIESEL: And finally, diesel. Tennessee starts the week at $3.42 per gallon, ranking number 9. Texas, of course, brags the lowest diesel prices at $3.20 per gallon, while Hawaii leads the expensive side at $5.23. Just when you thought diesel drivers couldn’t suffer more, Hawaii proves you wrong.
