MURFREESBORO, Tenn. — The Rutherford County Health Department is recognizing September as National Preparedness Month, working with local partners to highlight how planning ahead can save lives and protect communities during emergencies.

“Preparedness starts at home,” said County Health Director Sydney Butterfield. “Simple steps like building an emergency kit, having multiple ways to receive alerts, and creating a family emergency plan can make a huge difference when every second counts.”

Key Steps to Preparedness

  • Know Your Risks: Learn what hazards may affect your area, from earthquakes and severe weather to disease outbreaks.

  • Have a Family Emergency Plan: Decide how your family will communicate and where you will meet if separated.

  • Build an Emergency Supply Kit: Stock food, water, medicine, and other essentials to last until help arrives.

  • Be Informed: Sign up for local emergency alerts and use tools like weather radios and mobile devices to stay updated.

  • Get Involved: Join volunteer efforts such as the Community Emergency Response Team, the Medical Reserve Corps, or take CPR and emergency training through the Red Cross.

Preparedness Month emphasizes that first responders may not always be immediately available during disasters, so families and individuals should take proactive steps now.

The Tennessee Department of Health encourages all Tennesseans to take time this month to review their plans, prepare supplies, and get connected to community resources.
