Authorities have officially identified Tyler Robinson, 22, of Utah as the suspect in the fatal shooting of conservative activist Charlie Kirk. CBS News' Deborah Rodriguez has the update...

Utah Governor Spencer Cox confirmed Robinson’s identity during a Friday morning press conference, joined by FBI Director Kash Patel and other law enforcement officials. (Hear the 11-Minute Recording of the Press Conference Above Article - Below Photo)

According to Cox, a family member of Robinson contacted a friend after Robinson confessed or implied responsibility for the shooting. That friend then alerted the Washington County Sheriff’s Office, triggering further investigation.

Investigators used surveillance footage from Utah Valley University (UVU)—where the shooting took place on Wednesday—to place Robinson arriving on campus at about 8:29 a.m. in a gray Dodge Challenger. When Robinson was arrested in the early hours of Friday, he was reportedly dressed in clothing matching what he was wearing in the footage.

Cox said Robinson had become increasingly political in recent years. A family member told investigators that Robinson had attended a dinner prior to September 10 and referenced that Kirk would be speaking at UVU in conversations.

Public records show Robinson last registered to vote on July 13, 2021, and that he is currently listed as “none declared” regarding political party affiliation.

The shooting occurred during an event hosted by Turning Point USA, a conservative organization co-founded by Kirk. Kirk was killed while speaking at Utah Valley University; the event was part of his “American Comeback Tour.”

President Donald Trump, who first announced Kirk’s death Wednesday, also confirmed Robinson’s arrest on Friday morning.
