Op-Ed from State Representative Mike Sparks (R-Smyrna): Like many Tennesseans, I was thrilled when I heard that Elon Musk's Boring Company will build its next tunnel in the Volunteer State, dubbed the Music City Loop.
Many Rutherford County residents drive into downtown Nashville every day and understand the seriousness of the city's congestion problem. It's clear that innovative solutions like the airport-to-downtown tunnel will be instrumental in alleviating traffic in and around Davidson County.
Unfortunately, Democrat leaders in Nashville like Mayor Freddie O'Connell care more about political optics than serving their constituents. Some metro council members have been up in arms since the project's announcement in July, alleging they have serious environmental, fiscal, and political concerns.
The six-member Tennessee Senate Democrat Caucus posted on X calling for a "public bidding process" to "debate the best deal for taxpayers," despite the entire project being privately funded without placing a burden on state and local taxpayers.
I would encourage my Democrat colleagues to remember they work for the people, not left-wing advocacy groups hell-bent on halting real progress.
Music City ranked 27th in the world and 11th in the United States for worst congestion in 2024, according to a recent report from Inrix, a transportation data and analytics company. Nashvillians lost 63 hours in traffic last year, costing each driver roughly $1,128. Those numbers are likely much higher for commuters from Smyrna, La Vergne, Murfreesboro and surrounding areas, given up to 224,000 vehicles travel on I-840 and I-24 in Rutherford County each day.
Coupled with Tennessee's exponential population growth, especially in Rutherford, this issue needs creative solutions and urgent action. I often repeat the phrase, "don't let perfect be the enemy of good." While the proposed tunnel won't fix all of Nashville's transportation issues, it's certainly a step in the right direction.
This is why I recently sent a letter to Elon Musk requesting further assistance and cooperation with local leaders to find bold new ways to alleviate congestion. I proposed the idea of a tunnel connecting Murfreesboro to downtown Nashville, which would decrease traffic and provide a modern mode of transportation into the city.
A two-way tunnel would also make it easier to visit our community, attracting additional visitors and boosting our local economy.
While Democrats' sole agenda item has been to oppose President Donald Trump for the past decade, Republicans have worked to make life better through innovative solutions and common-sense governance. Ideas like the Music City Loop are vital to moving our state forward.
In addition to heavy traffic, Middle Tennessee commuters face increased dangers on the road.
Noah Taylor, a 22-year-old Smyrna man, was shot and killed in July he was driving to work on I-24. A month later, not far from where Taylor was tragically murdered, two suspects threw eggs on a driver's windshield, forcing the victim off the road to rob him at gunpoint.
Tennesseans are tired of reckless drivers and road rage. My Republican colleagues and I will continue to find solutions to these problems so that everyone feels safe on the roads.
I was honored to pass the Jacob T. Barnhardt Act in 2024 which established a task force to find effective ways to reduce illegal street racing. We also strengthened the penalty for drag racing from a Class A misdemeanor to a Class E felony to deter the dangerous practice, and this year, we funded the addition of 116 new Tennessee Highway Patrol positions.
Tennesseans deserve high-quality and safe roads, which is why Republican lawmakers have invested more than $5.8 billion to deliver important infrastructure improvements over the last few years. We also created a sustainable source of funding for transportation projects by redirecting sales tax revenues from new and used tires to the Tennessee Department of Transportation, which is expected to generate $80 to $85 million annually.
While Democrats attempt to stifle progress, Republicans will continue to advocate for effective and unique ways to improve transportation – and life – in the Volunteer State.
A Murfreesboro-Nashville tunnel will decrease congestion, improve travel safety and make Tennessee more connected so that we can continue to lead the nation in innovation and prosperity.
State Rep. Mike Sparks of Smyrna represents District 49 in the Tennessee House of Representatives, which includes part of Rutherford County.
