Knoxville, TN - Laurel Cox, a freshman at the University of Tennessee’s Herbert College of Agriculture, just earned a $30,000 scholarship—and a whole lot of pride back home in Middle Tennessee.
Cox, who hails from Bell Buckle, was named the winner of Durango Boots’ second annual National Day of the Cowgirl Award. The scholarship, awarded in partnership with the Dude Ranch Foundation, honors one first-year college student who embodies the grit, grace, and heart of the American cowgirl.
“I was shocked and humbled,” Cox said. “Durango saw something special in me, and I’m so grateful. This scholarship lifts the financial burden and lets me focus fully on my education and future.”
Studying both animal science and journalism, Cox plans to use her degrees to spotlight the untold stories of the agricultural world—especially those who’ve helped shape the American West.
Durango’s marketing manager Erin DeLong said Cox stood out for her commitment to faith, hard work, and community. “She truly reflects the values we celebrate with this award,” DeLong said.
Applications for the next Cowgirl Scholarship open September 15 and close December 31, 2025. But for now, Laurel Cox is riding tall—and Middle Tennessee couldn’t be prouder.
