L to R: County Mayor Joe Carr and Main Street Murfreesboro’s Sarah Callender

Murfreesboro, TN - Main Street Murfreesboro’s Executive Director Sarah Callender told WGNS News that the historic preservation group backs Mayor Joe Carr’s efforts to close the Historic Rutherford County Courthouse on the weekends. That of course means - - no public restrooms, at least not the restrooms inside the historic courthouse for downtown visitors to use during public functions on the local square. But don't worry, other solutions are available when it comes to that important break that visitors may have to take!

As you recall from earlier WGNS broadcasts, Mayor Carr said… Carr explained that the decision to close the courthouse on the weekends was brought about by the thousands of people needing to use the restrooms when special events happened on the square. See the original news story HERE.

In a special announcement Main Street Murfreesboro, as a non-profit organization, voiced their support for the preservation of the Rutherford County Historic Courthouse and its surrounding grounds following the County Mayor’s decision to close the building on the weekends. Callender emphasized the Main Street’s mission, “To maintain, enhance, and promote the historic downtown as the heart of our community. That mission comes to life through partnerships with local government, businesses, and civic groups—all working together to create a vibrant sense of place in the city’s historic district.”

Callender acknowledged the County Mayor’s decision to limit courthouse access on weekends, noting the importance of protecting the building’s historic integrity. She expressed gratitude that the Murfreesboro Saturday Market, a 15-year tradition, will continue on the courthouse grounds. The market draws residents and visitors alike to shop, dine, and explore the square.

The executive director continued, “Main Street Murfreesboro has long worked to minimize the impact of its events on courthouse facilities. Friday Night Live concerts use portable restrooms, and the Saturday Market partners with First Baptist Church to provide facilities for guests. These thoughtful solutions reflect a commitment to both community engagement and preservation. We understand this decision was made with safety, security, and long-term stewardship in mind”

Callender concluded. “We remain committed to working with our partners to keep downtown Murfreesboro vibrant, historic, and welcoming for all.”

RESTROOMS: In closing, certain events, such as the Friday Night Live concerts during the summer, will continue to provide restroom options through portable facilities to minimize the impact on courthouse restrooms. Likewise, the ongoing Saturday Market partners with First Baptist Church to make restrooms available for attendees. These collaborative solutions help balance community access with the long-term preservation of the courthouse.
