Murfreesboro, TN - If you were anywhere near SportsCom’s outdoor pool on Saturday (9/27/2025), chances are you heard the joyful chaos of paws hitting water and humans laughing as their four-legged companions dragged them toward the splash zone. The annual Puppy Plunge at ‘Boro Beach was back, and it was tail-wagging perfection.
Admission was free, but Murfreesboro Parks and Recreation asked attendees to bring non-perishable food items for Greenhouse Ministries’ Spring House food pantry. And boy, did the community show up—with full hearts and full wagons. Cliff Sharp, co-founder of Greenhouse Ministries, shared with WGNS that the need has doubled recently, with around 70 people now coming in daily. The donations from this event will go a long way.
The weather couldn’t have been better. The morning started in the 70s, and by the time the last soggy pup was coaxed out of the pool, it was a pleasant 81 degrees. Dogs of all shapes and sizes splashed, sprinted, and socialized like seasoned pros. And while humans were strictly poolside, the dogs had full reign of the water—vaccinated, non-aggressive, and ready to party.
There’s something magical about a puppy plunge. Dogs who might growl or posture on the sidewalk suddenly become best friends in the water. Maybe it’s the shared excitement, the neutral turf, or the sheer joy of splashing around. Whatever it is, it works. You could see it in the way a shy lab warmed up to a bold beagle, or how a golden retriever and a scrappy terrier chased each other like old pals.
As the sun began to dip and lifeguards made their rounds, signaling the end of the Puppy Plunge, but the dogs weren’t having it. Some planted their paws in protest. Others made one last dash into the shallows, barking out their version of “five more minutes!” Owners laughed, bribed with treats, and gently tugged leashes, but the pups knew: this was paradise, and leaving it felt like betrayal.
Eventually, the pool cleared. Wet fur, tired paws, and satisfied sighs marked the end of another unforgettable Puppy Plunge. And as the dogs trotted off, some still glanced back wistfully at the water. You know what these pups will be dreaming about tonight!
Thanks to Murfreesboro Parks and Recreation for keeping the tradition alive. And thanks to the dogs—for reminding us how easy it is to make a friend, share a bowl, and live “in the moment”.
