MURFREESBORO, TN – A growing number of senior citizens are making a move that may surprise some – and it’s becoming more common than many realize. According to the Pew Research Center, nearly 60 million Americans are now living in households with two or more generations of adults.

Locally, the trend has gained so much attention that the St. Clair Street Senior Center is hosting a class on the subject... That was Laura Grissom, Health & Wellness Coordinator for the senior center in Murfreesboro.

Believe it or not, the number of seniors moving in with their adult children has more than doubled in the past 30 years... In 1995, about 7% of seniors lived with adult children. By 2018, that figure climbed to 14%. Today, researchers estimate the number could be as high as 18%.

AgingCare.com reports that some seniors choose to live with their adult children to meet medical needs, in addition to feeling more comfortable when surrounded by family rather than living in a senior housing environment.

However, one of the most common reasons seniors move in with their adult children is a lack of financial resources after retirement. This can stem from Americans living longer than previous generations, but it may also result from poor planning or retiring too early without sufficient savings to cover the rising costs of housing, food, and medical care.

The reverse can also be true—some adult children may have changed career paths one too many times or simply don’t earn enough to afford housing in today's economy. In many cases, families choose a multigenerational living arrangement as a way to save money while supporting one another.
