MURFREESBORO, Tenn. (WGNS) - Rutherford County is mourning the loss of one of its most beloved four-legged officers, K9 Appie, who passed away peacefully at home Sunday night, September 28, 2025, surrounded by his family and fellow K9 team members.

Appie was paired with Rutherford County Sheriff’s K9 Deputy Sarah Blair in March 2019 and served the Patrol Division as a dual-purpose K9 until his retirement in 2024. Known for both his skill in the field and his gentle demeanor with the community, Appie quickly became a trusted partner and community favorite.

During his career, Appie was recognized for bravery and dedication. He and Deputy Blair were awarded Deputy of the Month in January 2023 for their actions during an apprehension on Interstate 24. The pair also received a Life Saver’s Award in October 2022 for locating a suicidal man during a track — a moment that highlighted Appie’s lifesaving abilities.

While he excelled in apprehensions, narcotics seizures, and tracks, Appie was equally known for his role as a community ambassador. He performed dozens of demonstrations for children’s groups, relishing the chance to interact with young people and soaking up affection from those eager to meet him.

In retirement, Appie was diagnosed with Degenerative Myelopathy. Through the support of Project K9 Hero, a nonprofit dedicated to ensuring quality care for retired police and military dogs, he received medical assistance and end-of-duty services.

Beyond his service, Appie loved his Kong toy, his partner Deputy Blair, and his best little girl at home. He was deeply loved in return, leaving behind a legacy of loyalty, service, and connection that will long be remembered in Rutherford County.
