Murfreesboro’s Downtown Footprint Set to Blossom

Oct 04, 2025 at 09:18 am by WGNS News

Murfreesboro, TN - During a recent WGNS Action Line broadcast, Murfreesboro Mayor Shane McFarland shared that the city has been acquiring parcels of land along NW Broad Street, adjacent to Cannonsburgh Village and Lytle Creek. The stretch of property begins at Front Street and extends northward to the point where Lytle Creek flows beneath Broad. While no official plans have been announced, the mayor hinted that the area’s growing needs—especially for Cannonsburgh Village and the nearby Greenway Trailhead—could shape future development.

One of the most prominent buildings on the site, the Yard Sale Store, is in the process of moving, leaving Captain D’s as the sole remaining business in operation. According to Mayor McFarland, the restaurant’s lease is still active, which explains its continued presence amid the shifting landscape.

Town Creek Daylighting Project Adds a Scenic Touch

Just 200 feet from the southern edge of this property, the daylighting of Town Creek is already underway. This initiative will transform the area into a more inviting, family-friendly space, complete with a landscaped walking path lined with native plants. Plans include rest areas and spots for live music, offering a peaceful retreat in the heart of downtown.

Keystone Project Gains Momentum with City Council Approval

All of this ties into the broader vision of the Keystone Project—a transformative development that will bring a mix of retail, office space, condominiums, and apartments directly across NW Broad Street, only 2-blocks off Murfreesboro’s historic square. A pedestrian bridge is slated to span NW Broad at South Church Street, connecting the park-like setting of Town Creek and Cannonsburgh Village to the upscale amenities of the Keystone Project.

Following a 4-2 vote by the Murfreesboro City Council on October 2, 2025, the developer is now finalizing agreements with landowners and refining the project’s design. The footprint stretches from South Church to Vine Street, with NW Broad as its front and Murfreesboro City Hall and Linebaugh Library at its back. The final agreement is expected to be signed by March 1, 2026.

Stay tuned—WGNS will continue to bring updates as this exciting chapter in Murfreesboro’s downtown development unfolds.
