City Leaders to Review New Housing Plans at Upcoming Workshop

Murfreesboro, TN – City Council members will meet next week at 2:00PM on Wednesday, Oct. 15, 2025, in the Community Room of the Municipal Airport Business Center for a Joint Conceptual Workshop dealing with proposed development projects.

Among the projects up for discussion is a proposal from Swanson Development and SEC, Inc. to annex and rezone property at 6331 Franklin Road. The developers are also seeking approval to rezone land for a new townhome community called Battleground Place. These plans have raised questions because they don’t align with the city’s future land use map, which designates the area as “Suburban Residential Character.” That designation typically calls for larger lots or clusters of single-family detached homes.

Despite the mismatch with the city’s long-term planning map, officials say the proposed townhomes could still be a good fit. The property’s location and size make it a natural transition zone between traditional single-family neighborhoods and nearby commercial areas. Similar developments—like Havenwood and Georgetown Square Townhomes—have already set a precedent in the area, suggesting that attached housing might be a reasonable compromise.

As Murfreesboro experiences steady growth, city council members are leaning into their monthly workshops as a space for deeper reflection and creative problem-solving. These gatherings offer a chance to examine development proposals with fresh eyes, encouraging innovative ideas while staying grounded in the city’s vision. The goal is to strike a thoughtful balance—welcoming progress without losing the unique character of Murfreesboro’s neighborhoods or straying from long-term planning priorities.
