Murfreesboro, TN - Downtown Murfreesboro has a few extra faces this October—and they’re made of straw. Main Street Murfreesboro’s fourth annual “Scarecrows Downtown” event has brought 36 whimsical, spooky, and downright clever creations to the sidewalks. But don’t blink—they’ll vanish after Halloween.
Sarah Callender, Executive Director of Main Street Murfreesboro, says the event is more than just decoration. “It adds to our sense of community, and you can't help but smile when you see all the interesting scarecrows hanging around the sidewalks,” she shared. Inspired by similar events in other towns, Sarah launched the local version to get folks walking, talking, and admiring the artistry.
And artistry there is! From the Rutherford Arts Alliance to small businesses on the square, participants are in it to win it. “There are three businesses that plan their scarecrow designs months in advance,” Sarah said. “The challenge to make the best scarecrow is not taken lightly.”
Even the Boys and Girls Club jumped in this year, rallying their crew to join the fun. Visitors can vote for their favorite scarecrow by scanning QR codes attached to each display. Every vote enters you into a $25 drawing, and the People’s Choice winner also pockets $25.
Meanwhile, six anonymous judges from MTSU’s Art and Design department are scoring entries based on creativity and theme. Their picks will be revealed on WGNS Radio this Halloween. First place earns $100, second $75, and third $50.
So if you’re strolling through downtown Murfreesboro this month, keep your eyes peeled. These scarecrows may not talk—but they sure know how to make a statement.
