Murfreesboro, TN - Rutherford County’s Fire Marshal Joshua Sanders was among the first specialized responders called to assist in the aftermath of Friday morning’s deadly explosion at the Accurate Energetic Systems (AES) facility in McEwen, Tennessee. Acting at the request of the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF), Sanders deployed in conjunction with his role on the ATF Arson and Explosives Task Force. His presence marks Rutherford County’s direct involvement in the federal investigation of one of the state’s most devastating industrial incidents.

The explosion occurred around 7:45 a.m. CDT on October 10, 2025 at the AES site, a sprawling 1,300-acre property near the Hickman-Humphreys County line. The blast leveled one building, scattered debris across a half-mile radius, and shook homes more than 20 miles away. Multiple fatalities have been confirmed, though officials have not released a count. 19 individuals were initially reported missing, but one person was later found safe at home. Several others were hospitalized, and at least one remains in critical condition.

18 people are still missing and feared dead, according to Hickman and Humphreys County law enforcement.

Rutherford County Mayor Joe Carr issued a statement Friday afternoon, saying, “Prayers are with the responders and those affected by this horrible tragedy.”

Investigators from the Rutherford County Fire Marshal’s Office will continue to support the probe through its conclusion, working alongside federal agencies including the FBI, ATF, and Tennessee Bureau of Investigation.

The cause of the blast remains under investigation, with officials warning that the process could take many days. AES, a manufacturer of explosives for defense, aerospace, and demolition industries, has a history of safety violations and workplace injuries. In 2014, a similar explosion at the site claimed one life and injured three others.

As the investigation unfolds, Rutherford County’s involvement underscores the importance of regional cooperation in responding to industrial disasters. Fire Marshal Sanders’ expertise and the county’s continued support reflect a commitment to uncovering the truth and ensuring safety for all Tennesseans.
