MURFREESBORO, Tenn. — A 17-year-old male wanted in connection with a fatal shooting on North Academy Street was taken into custody late Friday night, Oct. 10, following an 11-hour standoff with the Murfreesboro Police Department’s Special Operations Unit (SOU).
According to police, SOU officers arrived at a home on East Castle Street around 1 p.m. Friday to serve a first-degree murder warrant on the teen. When officers attempted to make contact, the suspect barricaded himself inside, initiating a lengthy standoff that stretched late into the night.
Throughout the standoff, officers used multiple less-lethal tactics in an effort to resolve the situation peacefully. The suspect reportedly damaged three police drones that entered the home during the operation.
At approximately 11:44 p.m., SOU officers made entry into the residence and located the teen hiding inside. He was taken into custody without further incident.
The murder charge stems from a shooting on Thursday, Oct. 9, in the 1000 block of North Academy Street. Investigators said the 17-year-old and several others were involved in an altercation with 26-year-old Kentrell London around 9 p.m. About 30 minutes later, the suspect allegedly returned to the home and shot London on the front porch, killing him.
The 17-year-old is currently being held at the Rutherford County Juvenile Detention Center pending a court hearing. Police say the investigation remains ongoing.
