BBB Warns Consumers About Phony Locksmith Company Charging Hidden “Cancellation Fees”

NASHVILLE, Tenn. — The Better Business Bureau (BBB) is warning consumers across Middle Tennessee to be cautious when searching online for locksmith services after receiving multiple reports about questionable practices involving a company advertising under the name HNM Locksmith.

According to a recent consumer report submitted to BBB Scam Tracker, what began as a simple commercial lock repair request turned into a frustrating ordeal. The consumer said they entered their name and phone number on the company’s website and were quickly contacted by a woman who promised a technician would call within minutes.

After hours of waiting and several follow-up calls, no technician ever arrived. When the consumer finally canceled the service after a four-hour delay, the company demanded a $69.99 “cancellation fee” — a charge that was never disclosed on the website or during scheduling.

The consumer refused to pay and alerted the Better Business Bureau, concerned that others might fall victim to the same deceptive advertisement.

“Scammers often pose as local locksmiths, but they’re really call centers that dispatch unlicensed or even nonexistent technicians,” said Robyn Householder, President and CEO of BBB serving Middle Tennessee and Southern Kentucky. “They advertise heavily online, sometimes using fake addresses to appear local, and then pressure customers into paying unexpected fees.”

BBB Tips to Avoid Locksmith Scams

  • Verify a Local Address: Check that the business address listed actually exists and is not shared or fabricated.

  • Search BBB.org: Read reviews, check for complaints, and verify whether the business is BBB Accredited.

  • Request a Written Estimate: Get the total cost in writing before agreeing to any work.

  • Avoid Generic Websites: Be cautious of vague or copycat business names.

  • Never Pay in Advance: Only pay once services are completed and verified.
