The Breeders' Cup Championship Saturday is a one of the best days in the sporting world. Nine grade 1 races will feature $23 million in purse money and the best of the best runners in the world. Horses from five different continents will convene at Del Mar in these real World Championships.. With all that cheese on the line, the competition is without question off the charts. Let's provide a quick thought or two on the day's events.
RACE 4 FILLY AND MARE SPRINT
Sweet Azteca is our top pick. Listed as the morning line favorite, she is two for two lifetime at Del Mar. Our longshot play in the race is Vahva running for Cherie DeVaux.
RACE 5 TURF SPRINT
These races are always super exciting especially at this short 5 furlong distance. Our top selection is two-time Kentucky Downs graduate AG Bullett. A girl taking on the boys, but she is coming in right. Our longshot play is another Kentucky Downs graduate, Bear River for trainer Keith Desormeaux.
RACE 6 SPRINT
A really wide open race with defending champ Straight No Chaser in the mix. He is very live in this one, but we think a deep closer could steal the show. Lovesick Blues is one of our live longshots and Nakotomi is another.
RACE 7 DISTAFF
The equivalent of the Classic for boys, this is for the top females at a mile and an eighth. Our top selection is the three-year-old filly Nitrogen running for trainer Mark Casse. Our longshot play is Cliquot for trainer Brendan Walsh.
RACE 8 TURF
Worth a cool $5 million this will feature lots of European talent. The top selection is of course a horse from across the pond, Minnie Hauk for trainer Aiden O'Brien. The longshot play is another horswe from Europe, Wimbledon Hawkeye ridden by Frankie Detorri.
RACE 9 CLASSIC
The big boy on the card features a super competitive field running for $7 million. Our top selection is the Japanes based Forever Young who finished third in this one last year. Our longshot play here will be Baeza for trainer John Shirreffs.
RACE 10 MILE
Run on the grass, this is usually one of the most thrilling races on the card. Our top selection is a local runner, Johannes, for trainer Tim Yakteen. Our longshot play is another locally based horse, Formidable Man conditioned by Mike McCarthy.
RACE 11 DIRT MILE
If he runs to form, Nysos is absolutely the horse in this one for Bob Baffert as he has won five of six lifetime. Defending champ Full Serrano is worth a look and our sentimental choice is of course Mystik Dan.
RACE 12 FILLY AND MARE TURF
Another race with lots of European influence. Cinderella's Dream just missed in this one last year and is our top selection here for trainer Charlie Appleby. The longshot play here is Kentucky Downs graduate Stellify for trainer Brad Cox.
