MURFREESBORO, TN — Monday, November 3, 2025, wasn’t just the start of another college basketball season—it was a full-court celebration at Murphy Center. With the NCAA tipping off nationwide, Middle Tennessee State University made its mark early, and you heard every thrilling moment on WGNS as the Lady Raiders launched their season with a comeback win for the ages.

Coach Rick Insell, now in his 50th season, led a dramatically rebuilt squad into battle against Tennessee State. Gone were all five starters from last year’s 26-win team. In their place? A bold new lineup featuring three freshmen, one sophomore, and a seasoned transfer—all stepping onto the court for their first official game together.

The Lady Raiders came out hot, dropping 25 points in the first quarter and forcing six turnovers. Sophomore Savannah Davis lit up the scoreboard early, helping MTSU build a 38–28 lead at the half. But Tennessee State wasn’t ready to fold. The Tigers roared back in the third quarter, outscoring MTSU 15–6 and trimming the lead to a single point. With the game hanging in the balance, the Lady Raiders dug deep and delivered an 8–0 run to close out the fourth quarter and seal the 59–53 victory.

Davis led the charge with 16 points, stepping into the veteran role with poise beyond her years. Senior transfer Alayna Contreras added 14 points and four steals, while freshman Blair Baugus made a statement in her collegiate debut with 10 points and 12 rebounds.

Coach Insell praised Davis’s leadership, saying, “Most of the team’s first college game… she was just trying to lead them as much as she can.” Davis, now the elder stateswoman at just 19, added, “It’s weird being the veteran as a sophomore, but I’ve been here before.”

Next up, the Lady Raiders hit the road for a Thursday showdown in St. Louis against the Billikens—and yes, you’ll hear that game live on WGNS.

Meanwhile, the Blue Raider men are gearing up for their own season opener on Wednesday, November 5, also at 10:30 a.m. CT. Milligan University comes to town, and forecasters are calling it a slam dunk for MTSU. With a deep bench and veteran talent, Coach Nick McDevitt’s squad is expected to make noise in Conference USA.

Soothsayers see promise on both sides of the court. The Lady Raiders may be young, but they’re loaded with potential and international flair. The Blue Raiders bring experience and balance, ready to battle through a tough non-conference slate.
