MURFREESBORO, Tenn. (WGNS) – Rutherford County residents should prepare for winter coats as a strong cold front approaches Middle Tennessee, delivering the coldest air since spring along with weekend rain and strong winds that may disrupt plans.
Bryan Barrett of Rutherford Weather shared the forecast in a Wednesday morning video update, highlighting a sharp temperature drop starting Sunday and reaching the low 20s by midweek. The analysis draws from the Global Forecast System (GFS) model, signaling a significant cold surge. Full details appear in the embedded video below.
Temperatures will plummet Sunday, Nov. 9, from 48 degrees Fahrenheit at 3 a.m. to 42 degrees by noon, 37 degrees at 3 p.m., and 35 degrees by evening, with winds intensifying the chill.
The deepest freeze arrives Monday, Nov. 10, with overnight lows at 27 degrees and 25 degrees by 9 a.m. Tuesday. Highs will barely hit the low 30s or 40s. Tuesday, Nov. 11—Veterans Day for many—will see persistent cold without relief.
Slight warming is forecast for Wednesday, Nov. 12, but the front marks early seasonal changes. Meteorological winter begins Dec. 1, hinting at more cold ahead.
Rain adds complexity on Friday, Nov. 7, with showers and thunderstorms moving in from the west by noon, peaking 6-9 p.m. This could delay high school football games in the area due to lightning. No severe threats are anticipated, and rain will exit by early Saturday, Nov. 8, ushering in dry, frigid air.
Barrett stressed that forecasts may evolve as models update, urging preparation: dress in layers, safeguard pipes against freezing, and monitor Rutherford Weather channels for alerts.
This chill follows a mild fall with temperatures in the 60s and 70s through early November. Experts tie such shifts to La Niña influences, which typically bring colder, wetter winters.
For Veterans Day plans or outdoor events, readiness is essential. The outlook underscores winter's early arrival in Rutherford County.
