MURFREESBORO, Tenn. (WGNS) — The Salvation Army of Murfreesboro launched the holiday giving season with its annual Red Kettle Kickoff Celebration, themed “The Sound of Hope,” on Wednesday, November 5, 2025. The vibrant community gathering, held at 10 a.m. at Civic Plaza on 111 West Vine Street, drew locals together to celebrate compassion and kick off a vital fundraising campaign that supports food, shelter, and hope for families in Rutherford and Cannon Counties.

Attendees savored complimentary donuts and hot chocolate provided by Donut Country, while festive tunes echoed through the plaza courtesy of the Mitchell-Neilson Elementary “Eagle Nation Choir” and The Salvation Army's Cumberland Brass Band. Murfreesboro Mayor Shane McFarland was on hand to make a few comments to those gathered, delivering uplifting remarks on the transformative power of community generosity. He, along with Vice Mayor Bill Shacklett, untied the ribbon on the kettle to signify the official start of the Red Kettle season.

“This event truly captured the heart of what the Red Kettle represents — hope, community, and compassion,” said Sgt. George Keith, Corps Administrator for The Salvation Army Murfreesboro. “Every dollar dropped into a kettle stayed local, helping families right here in Rutherford and Cannon Counties.”

Under this year’s theme, “Give with Joy,” the celebration highlighted how acts of giving—through donations, volunteering, or direct support—spread holiday cheer and foster new beginnings for those in need. Organizers expressed gratitude to sponsors Donut Country and Lanham Events for their contributions, which helped make the morning a resounding success.

The event served as the official opener for The Salvation Army’s iconic Red Kettle campaign, a tradition that has long symbolized seasonal goodwill. Community members were inspired to participate by bell-ringing, contributing to kettles, or exploring volunteer opportunities, ensuring a brighter Christmas for neighbors facing hardship.
