MURFREESBORO, TN - For more than four decades, Southeast Baptist Church at 708 Minerva Drive has opened its doors to the community with a gift unlike any other: the Bethlehem Marketplace. This immersive walk-through experience, first staged in the early 1980s, has become a cherished Murfreesboro tradition, drawing thousands of visitors each year. In 2025, the church will celebrate its 41st reenactment, scheduled for December 6–7, marking a slight shift from the second weekend of December to the first full weekend. Organizers say the adjustment helps avoid conflicts with other holiday events while ensuring families can make the Marketplace part of their seasonal celebrations.

The Marketplace transports guests back two thousand years to the streets of Bethlehem, complete with Roman soldiers, census takers, merchants, and even live camels. Sawdust-lined pathways and carefully crafted stalls create an atmosphere free of modern distractions, allowing visitors to step into the world as it might have looked on the night of Christ’s birth. The event is free to the public, a gift Southeast Baptist has faithfully offered for generations.

Attendance has remained strong throughout its history, with 6,000 to 8,000 people visiting annually. Families often return year after year, and now a third generation of children is experiencing the Marketplace alongside parents and grandparents who once walked those same streets as youngsters. The longevity of the event has made it one of the longest-running immersive Christmas reenactments in the country, a point of pride for the congregation and the wider Murfreesboro community.

While Southeast Baptist was not the very first church to stage a Bethlehem Marketplace—similar events began appearing across the United States in the late 1970s and early 1980s—it has distinguished itself through scale, authenticity, and consistency. Its attention to detail has made the Marketplace a regional tradition, drawing visitors from neighboring states who come to witness the living history.

The Marketplace’s impact goes beyond spectacle. It has become a touchstone for faith, family, and community, offering a moment of reflection amid the bustle of the holiday season. For Southeast Baptist, the event is more than a reenactment; it is a ministry of hospitality, a way to share the story of Bethlehem with warmth and accessibility.

As the church prepares for its 41st year, the Bethlehem Marketplace continues to stand as a reminder that traditions, when nurtured with care and devotion, can bridge generations and bring a community together in celebration.
