Rutherford County Clerk Saves the Day and Stops Jury-Duty Scam Before Victim Loses Money

RUTHERFORD COUNTY, TN — Another frightening jury-duty scam has surfaced in Rutherford County, but thanks to the quick thinking of Circuit Court Clerk Melissa Harrell, one resident narrowly avoided becoming the scammer’s next victim.

Harrell’s friend received a call from someone pretending to be with federal authorities, claiming that the man had missed federal jury duty and now faced immediate arrest unless he paid $5,000. When the victim explained he did not have that amount, the scammer lowered the demand to $1,000, attempting to pressure him into paying quickly.

Feeling uncertain but frightened, the man texted Harrell to ask whether she knew the judge who supposedly issued the arrest threat. Harrell instantly recognized the situation as a scam and told him not to pay a single dollar. Her quick response prevented him from losing money to a criminal demanding cash to avoid a fake arrest.

Officials stress that judges and law enforcement officers NEVER call, text, or email citizens demanding money—and they do not threaten arrests for missed jury duty. Anyone who receives such a message should hang up immediately and report it to local law enforcement.

Harrell is urging residents to share this warning with friends, family members, and neighbors. Scammers often prey on fear, hoping victims will act quickly without verifying the situation.

Community members are reminded: Don’t be fooled. Don’t pay. And don’t let scammers intimidate you into giving away your hard-earned money.
