MURFREESBORO, TN - Murfreesboro police are asking for help identifying a man and woman wanted for questioning after a theft at Kroger on Old Fort Parkway. Investigators say the incident happened on October 31, 2025, when a woman distracted a shopper while her partner stole the victim’s wallet from her purse. That wallet was later used at Lowe’s, also on Old Fort Parkway, where fraudulent purchases were made.
Authorities released details about the pair and the burgundy or red Dodge Journey SUV they were seen driving away from Lowe’s. Detective Jamison is handling the case, and he asks that anyone who recognizes the suspects or the vehicle is urged to phone 629-201-5581.
While shoplifting overall has declined, police stress that organized retail theft remains a serious concern. Just weeks ago, Lebanon officers arrested suspects believed to be tied to a nationwide ring targeting hardware stores. These larger operations are not focused on grocery stores, but they highlight the ongoing challenge of coordinated thefts across Tennessee.
Franklin Police have issued warnings about “distraction thefts” in grocery stores. In these cases, thieves often work in pairs, one engaging a shopper while the other steals a wallet or purse. Officials say these crimes are not a growing trend but rather a recurring risk that tends to spike at certain times of year.
Tennessee ranks just outside the top ten states that are most affected by retail theft, with more than 1,600 incidents per 100,000 residents reported in 2021. Even so, there is no clear evidence of a seasonal surge in grocery store thefts this winter. November did bring isolated reports of employee theft and burglary alarms at stores across the state, but investigators say those appear to be individual cases rather than part of a broader pattern.
For Murfreesboro shoppers, the reminder is simple: stay alert, keep personal belongings secure, and report suspicious activity. Police continue to monitor both local incidents and larger organized rings, working to keep theft from disrupting everyday routines.
