MURFREESBORO, TN - Ever wondered what it’s really like to wear a badge? The Murfreesboro Police Department is giving residents a chance to see what it's like to be a police officer with its upcoming Citizens Police Academy. Classes will be Tuesday evenings from January 27 through April 21, 2026 at police headquarters at 1004 N. Highland Avenue. Applications are now open, but space is limited—so don’t wait too long to secure your spot.
The academy isn’t just a classroom experience. It’s a tradition that began back in June of 2000, designed to strengthen the bond between officers and the community. Over the years, some participants have even gone on to pursue careers in law enforcement after being inspired by what they learned.
On WGNS broadcasts, Chief Michael Bowen has often spoken about how technology is reshaping the way crimes are solved, and academy participants will see that firsthand. From the Real Time Crime Center to virtual training simulations, you’ll have a front-row seat to the tools used to train officers. The program also includes access to Murfreesboro’s state-of-the-art forensic lab, where participants see how evidence is processed and analyzed.
But the experience doesn’t stop there. Attendees will ride along with officers on patrol, explore specialized units, and ask questions directly to those who serve and protect our city every day. It’s a chance to see the human side of policing, to understand the challenges, and to appreciate the dedication behind the badge.
The Citizens Police Academy is more than just an inside look—it’s a bridge between the department and the people it serves. If you’ve ever been curious about how Murfreesboro’s police operate, this is your opportunity to step inside their world.
Applications are being accepted now, and with limited seats available, early registration is strongly encouraged. Don’t miss out because you waited too long.
