NOLENSVILLE, Tenn. — An investigation is ongoing into a deadly hit-and-run crash that claimed the life of a bicyclist late Wednesday night near the Rutherford County line in Williamson County.
The collision occurred around 11 p.m. on Nolensville Pike near the intersection of Burkitt Road in Nolensville. Metro Nashville Police Department investigators say a bicyclist traveling northbound was struck by a vehicle and critically injured.
The victim has been identified as 31-year-old Blaise Schaeffer. Authorities report Schaeffer was riding from the Nolensville area toward Nashville when he was hit near Burkitt Road. The vehicle involved was described as a blue Honda Civic.
Following the collision, Schaeffer was transported to TriStar Nolensville Emergency Room, located less than 2,000 feet from the crash site. Despite lifesaving efforts, he later died from his injuries.
Investigators say evidence shows the Honda Civic had been driving erratically prior to the crash. A Nolensville police officer reportedly attempted to stop the vehicle shortly before the collision, but the driver fled. After striking the bicyclist, the vehicle became disabled at Nolensville Pike and Concord Hills Drive.
Police say the driver exited the vehicle and ran from the scene. A short distance away, officers located a woman at a nearby business. Detectives believe she may have been a passenger in the vehicle involved in the crash.
The Metro Nashville Police Department continues to work to confirm the identity of the driver and locate him. The case remains an active hit-and-run investigation.
