MURFREESBORO, TN - The Rutherford County Historical Society is closing out 2025 with a full calendar of holiday events and historic commemorations.

Christmas Brunch this Saturday - Members will gather this Saturday, December 20, for the Society’s annual Christmas Brunch at the Ransom School House. The event runs from 9 a.m. until noon, with attendees asked to bring a breakfast dish to share. A group photo of members will be taken on the front porch of the historic Ransom building.

New Year's Eve - After a short break, the Society will welcome 2026 with a New Year’s Eve Party on Saturday, January 3, also at the Ransom School House from 9 a.m. until noon. Members are encouraged to bring an appetizer to share as part of the celebration.

The Society reminds members to renew their dues for 2026. Annual membership is $25, payable by check to RCHS, PO Box 906, Murfreesboro, TN 37133-0906.

January Month Meeting Jan. 19 - The first monthly meeting of the new year will be held Monday, January 19, at 7 p.m. at Oaklands Mansion, 501 N. Maney Avenue. Shirley Jones will be the featured speaker, presenting on the Battle of Stones River.

The 163rd anniversary of the battle will be commemorated at Stones River National Battlefield from December 26 through January 2. The observance will include ranger-led talks, battlefield tours, living history programs, and artillery demonstrations.

The Battle of Stones River, fought from December 31, 1862, to January 2, 1863, was one of the bloodiest clashes of the Civil War. The Union’s narrow victory boosted northern morale and reinforced the momentum of the Emancipation Proclamation. Organizers say the anniversary is not only a remembrance of the battle but also an opportunity to reflect on its role in shaping the nation’s history.
