NEW YORK, NY - The City of La Vergne’s economic development efforts were spotlighted last week in New York, where the city was invited to join a panel discussion at the International Council of Shopping Centers (ICSC) conference. The invitation marked a milestone for the community, reflecting years of careful planning, infrastructure investment, and relationship-building aimed at positioning La Vergne for steady, responsible growth.

“This panel was curated to showcase cities that are doing something right—whether it’s redevelopment, infrastructure alignment, public-private partnerships, or streamlined processes,” said Mayor Jason Cole. “Our invitation to be a part of the panel illustrates how La Vergne is being recognized as forward-thinking rather than reactive, which matters a lot in competitive regional growth conversations.”

The city’s delegation included a cross-departmental team, underscoring La Vergne’s collaborative approach to development. When a scheduling change required Mayor Cole to step in as the panel speaker, the seamless transition highlighted how city leadership and staff operate from the same playbook, guided by shared priorities and a long-term vision.

Economic development director Tom Broeker emphasized that the progress residents see today is the result of years of intentional work. Many of La Vergne’s current businesses—such as Walmart, Aldi, Panda Express, Chipotle, Bojangles, Planet Fitness, Sherwin-Williams, RaceTrac, and BJ’s Wholesale Club—began as conversations at industry conferences like ICSC before becoming reality through sustained planning and follow-up.

The impact of retail development extends far beyond storefronts. Sales tax revenue generated locally helps fund essential services such as street repaving and infrastructure improvements. A 2025 retail analysis showed warehouse clubs and supercenters generated nearly $800 million in sales across Rutherford County, with La Vergne capturing its share through businesses like BJ’s Wholesale Club.

“The big win for the city is the increase in sales tax revenues, which have grown significantly over the years,” Broeker said. “Future projects, like the widening of Waldron Road and the Twinning Station development, will continue that momentum.”

Mayor Cole’s participation also marked a first for Rutherford County, as he became the community’s first mayor to speak at an ICSC national conference. For La Vergne, the recognition signals that its intentional, team-driven approach to growth is resonating far beyond the region.
