MURFREESBORO, TN - The Murfreesboro Fire-Rescue Department has long been known for its readiness, professionalism, and deep commitment to the people it serves. That reputation is backed by its rare ISO 1A rating—one of the highest distinctions a fire department can earn nationwide. It’s a mark of excellence that only a small number of departments in Tennessee, or anywhere in the country, can claim.

This week, MFRD added another honor to its growing list.

At Fire Station 1, SERVPRO Business Development Representative Gary Farley presented Firefighter Dillion Meyer with the SERVPRO Team Bisig Life Saving Award. The recognition stems from a dramatic rescue earlier this year, when Meyer and Firefighter Ryan St. Peter pulled an older man from his burning home on E. Burton Street.

Crews arrived to find heavy smoke and flames pouring from a bedroom window. Inside, conditions were deteriorating quickly. Without hesitation, Meyer and St. Peter pushed through the smoke, located the trapped resident, and carried him outside to safety. The man was suffering from burns and severe smoke inhalation—injuries that can turn deadly within minutes.

Firefighters immediately administered a Cyanokit®, a specialized medication MFRD carries to counteract cyanide poisoning. Cyanide is a dangerous toxin commonly produced in residential fires, and early treatment can make the difference between life and death.

“Firefighter Meyer’s actions reflect the courage, training, and selflessness we see from our first responders every day,” Farley said during the presentation. “Because of his quick thinking and decisive action, a life was saved, and SERVPRO is proud to recognize his heroic efforts.”

For Meyer, the award highlights what firefighters quietly do day after day—train, prepare, and step into danger so others can make it home. For the community, it’s another reminder of the extraordinary service provided by a department already ranked among the best in the nation. THANK YOU Murfreesboro Fire-Rescue Department.
