Davidson-Rutherford County Line (WGNS News) - Here's another update on the six vehicle crash that shut-down a section of the interstate New Year's Eve (12/31/2025). Eastbound I‑24 near the Rutherford–Davidson County line was shut down around 10:00PM near the Davidson-Rutherford County line. The Tennessee Highway Patrol was not able to release this information because an investigation was underway about a separate crash involving a THP trooper being injured on Old Hickory Boulevard while attempting to exit onto the interstate to reach the crash scene. His condition has not yet been released.
THP Sgt. Andy Perez has now confirmed the full scope of the original I‑24 collision to NewsRadio WGNS. The crash involved 6-vehicles: a heavily modified Honda Pimp, a Honda Accord, a Nissan Altima, a Nissan Maxima, a Toyota Camry, and an 18‑wheeler Freightliner. All were traveling eastbound near the 63.2 mile marker, just before the Old Hickory Blvd. exit.
According to the THP's preliminary report, the chain reaction began when the driver of the Nissan Altima, 27‑year‑old Hugo Balcazar, Jr., lost control. The Altima crossed all three eastbound lanes, struck the concrete barrier on the left shoulder, and came to an immediate stop in a lane of travel. The Freightliner then collided with the Altima. Both the Honda Pimp and the Honda Accord also struck the Altima, resulting in minor injuries to occupants of the two Hondas.
The report notes that the Nissan Maxima spun while attempting to avoid the crash and hit a TDOT sign. The final impact occurred when a Toyota Camry made contact with the Maxima on the right shoulder. Eastbound traffic—heading toward Chattanooga—was heavily affected as troopers worked to clear the scene.
THP states that “charges are pending” against Balcazar. As always, all individuals are presumed innocent until proven guilty in a court of law. Arrest information reported by NewsRadio WGNS and WGNSradio.com does not indicate guilt and is not evidence that a crime has occurred.
