ALMAVILLE, Tenn. (WGNS) - A stretch of Interstate 840 eastbound in Rutherford County was shut down for several hours early Wednesday morning after a tractor-trailer overturned and a second vehicle crashed into it amid foggy conditions.
According to the Tennessee Department of Transportation, the initial crash occurred around 3 a.m. near mile marker 46 when a tractor-trailer overturned in the eastbound lanes. The semi was transporting approximately 26-thousand pounds of pork and beef. Shortly after the rollover, a small sedan collided with the overturned trailer in the same area.
Traffic quickly backed up for miles, with congestion extending as far as Horton Highway in Triune while all eastbound lanes were closed. TDOT crews diverted traffic at the Almaville Road exit in Rutherford County as emergency responders and cleanup teams worked the scene.
Dense fog blanketed much of Middle Tennessee during the early morning hours, and TDOT indicated the low visibility conditions are believed to have been a contributing factor in the crashes.
It was not immediately clear whether injuries occurred as a result of the incidents. No additional details were released by TDOT.
The roadway reopened to eastbound traffic around 7:30 a.m., once the wreckage was cleared and conditions improved.
