MURFREESBORO, Tenn. — Murfreesboro Police Officer Samuel Lopez has been named Law Enforcement Officer of the Year by VFW Post 4575 Smith–Rogers–Reeves at Stones River, following a compassionate act that captured widespread community attention.

Lopez received the award Monday during a presentation held at the Hero’s Den. The recognition stems from a September 2025 incident in which Lopez responded to a call involving an injured and frightened dog wandering near the busy intersection of Northfield Boulevard and Sulphur Springs Road.

According to police, the dog was visibly hurt and fearful, refusing to approach Lopez. Rather than forcing the situation, Lopez used patience and empathy, offering his own lunch and water to gain the animal’s trust. His approach allowed the dog to be safely secured and later transferred into the care of Rutherford County Pet Adoption and Welfare Services.

“I am very honored to be chosen for this award and especially honored to receive it from VFW members who gave so much for our country,” Lopez said. “My wife and I had to put our dog down a few years ago when we first moved to Tennessee, so I have a heart for animals.”

Lopez noted that the encounter came at the end of a particularly demanding day. He had worked a 16-hour shift and responded to several high-stress calls prior to the animal rescue. After photos and video of the incident circulated on social media, the officer said the positive response from the public was a welcome boost following a challenging shift.

The Murfreesboro Police Department praised Lopez for demonstrating the department’s commitment to service, compassion, and community trust.

The VFW revived its Law Enforcement Officer of the Year Award this year after a brief hiatus, selecting Lopez as its first recipient since the award’s return.
