MURFREESBORO, Tenn. (WGNS) - A Tennessee Department of Transportation (TDOT) employee narrowly escaped injury Monday morning after their vehicle overturned on U.S. Highway 70 South or John Bragg Highway. Scroll down for the full size image of the overturned TDOT truck on Monday (01/26/2026).

The accident occurred as winter weather conditions continue to impact road safety across the region. Despite the truck flipping onto its side and coming to a rest in the highway median, the driver was able to climb out of the wreckage unassisted.

Emergency Response and Road Conditions

Rutherford County Sheriff’s deputies arrived on the scene shortly after the crash was reported. The incident serves as a stark reminder of the treacherous conditions facing motorists today.

Local authorities are urging extreme caution as several secondary roads remain hazardous.

Safety Tips for Winter Driving

  • Reduce Speed: Even if the main highways look clear, patches of "black ice" can cause loss of control.

  • Give Space: Maintain extra following distance between you and the driver in front.

  • Check Conditions: Verify local reports before heading out on secondary routes.

Note: TDOT crews are working around the clock to clear local routes, but drivers are advised to stay off the roads if travel is not essential.
