Murfreesboro Extends Closures as Ice Holds Its Grip

Jan 26, 2026 at 03:47 pm by WGNS News

MURFREESBORO, TENN. (WGNS) - Murfreesboro is settling in for yet another day of deep freeze, with cold days and even colder nights keeping much of the city at a standstill. City officials announced that Murfreesboro City Hall and most municipal facilities — including City Court — will remain closed on Tuesday, Jan. 27, 2026. Only essential public safety operations will be up and running, and those teams have been working nonstop to keep the community safe.

The Murfreesboro Police Department’s lobby and administrative offices on Highland Avenue will also be closed Tuesday, though officers and dispatchers remain on duty. Public Works and Street Department crews continue their 12‑hour rotations, salting and plowing as fast as the weather allows. While the main State Routes are in good shape and generally passable, the story changes quickly once you turn into neighborhoods. Secondary roads and side streets are still coated in ice, and downed limbs from the prolonged freeze continue to complicate travel.

Transit riders will need to make alternate plans, as Murfreesboro Transit is suspending service again on Tuesday for the safety of both riders and employees. Parks and Recreation is also pausing operations for another day. All indoor recreational facilities — including the St. Clair Street Senior Center — will be closed Jan. 27.

Solid Waste crews expect only limited collection on Tuesday. Residents are encouraged to place their carts at the street, and crews will pick up as soon as conditions improve. The City Convenient Center on Main Street and the Solid Waste administration office will be closed as well. For those wanting real‑time updates, the city continues to offer text alerts by sending BoroGarbage to 38276.

Murfreesboro City Schools will remain closed Tuesday, Jan. 27, and ESP will also be closed. The Municipal Airport Terminal and runway are shutting down for the day as well.

Anyone needing a closer look at road conditions can check the city’s live traffic cameras and the interactive Snow Routes map, which outlines State Routes, major corridors, and secondary streets at http://murfreesborotn.gov/SnowRoutes.

Drivers who must be out are urged to “Take It Slow” on icy pavement. And if you’re involved in a minor crash without injuries, Murfreesboro Police ask that you move your vehicle out of the roadway if possible to prevent secondary collisions. The department’s non‑emergency line is 615‑893‑1311.
