PREVIOUS:  Mt. JULIET, Tenn. — A late-night incident at Cedar Creek Marina on Old Hickory Lake / Cumberland River this past Friday resulted in two deaths following an officer-involved shooting, according to Mt. Juliet Police Department.

Police were called to the marina, located at 9120 Saundersville Road, around 9:30 p.m. after reports of an individual threatening people on the docks. While officers were searching for the suspect, they heard gunfire and immediately responded to the area, where they located an adult male suffering from a gunshot wound.

Officers moved the victim to a safer location so medical aid could be administered and paramedics could access the scene. The victim was transported to a nearby hospital for treatment.

Investigators said officers believed the armed suspect was contained near the end of C-Dock and may have been hiding on one of several boats. Due to the circumstances, the department’s Special Response Team was activated. The search was complicated by freezing temperatures, ice-covered water, and the marina’s layout.

During the operation, police say the suspect fired at officers. Five Mt. Juliet Police officers returned fire. The suspect was later found deceased. A second adult male gunshot victim was also located and pronounced deceased at the scene. No officers were injured in the exchange.

Authorities safely evacuated multiple individuals who were living aboard boats at the marina while officers worked to contain the threat.

Per standard protocol for officer-involved shootings, the Tennessee Bureau of Investigation is leading the investigation.

Several agencies assisted during the response, including the Wilson County Sheriff’s Office, Tennessee Highway Patrol, Tennessee Wildlife Resources Agency, Tennessee Homeland Security, the Federal Bureau of Investigation, and Rehab 23. Police said the agencies’ support was critical due to the complexity and danger of the situation.

C-Dock and all docks beyond it remain closed as the investigation continues. Officers on scene are coordinating with residents regarding when it will be safe for them to return to their boats.

“This was a tragic and complex incident. Our thoughts are with everyone affected as we begin to understand the full impact of what occurred. I’m incredibly proud of our officers, who faced an extremely dangerous situation with courage and commitment. They moved quickly to rescue a victim, evacuated residents, and worked to contain an armed threat in freezing, hazardous conditions. I’m also deeply thankful that none of our officers were hurt. The support from our law enforcement partners was tremendous as they stood with us through a long and difficult night.” – Chief Tyler Chandler

TBI:  At the request of 15th Judicial District Attorney General Jason Lawson, TBI agents are investigating the circumstances leading to a homicide, an attempted homicide, and an officer-involved shooting that occurred Saturday morning in Mount Juliet.

Preliminary information indicates that at around 9:30 p.m. on Friday, officers with the Mount Juliet Police Department responded to the 9000 block of Saundersville Road after receiving information about a person threatening others.

Upon arrival, officers found a man who had been shot. He was transported to a local hospital for treatment. Officers found the man believed to have fired the shots and contained him to a specific area.

For reasons still under investigation, the subject fired at officers shortly before 1:00 on Saturday morning. Multiple officers returned fire striking the subject. He was pronounced dead at the scene. Upon searching the area officers found a second victim that had been shot by the subject. That person was also pronounced dead at the scene. None of the officers involved were injured.

TBI agents are working to independently determine the series of events leading to the shooting, including collecting evidence and conducting interviews. Throughout the process, investigative findings will be shared with the District Attorney General for his further review and consideration. The TBI acts solely as fact-finders in its cases and does not determine whether the actions of an officer were justified in these types of matters. That decision rests with the District Attorney General requesting TBI’s involvement.

The TBI does not identify the officers involved in these types of incidents and instead refers questions of that nature to the respective department to answer as it sees fit.
