SMYRNA, Tenn. — Just after 4:00 a.m. on Tuesday morning, crews with the Smyrna Fire Department responded to a structure fire in the 5000 block of Poplar Wood Road. The blaze was at a home that sits about 1-thousand feet away from Red Hawk Parkway, which is one of the entry roads into the Stewarts Creek High School, Middle and Elementary Schools.

When firefighters arrived on the scene, they reported smoke visible from the residence. Crews quickly initiated an interior attack and determined the fire was primarily confined to the fireplace and chimney area of the home. Firefighters were able to extinguish the blaze and conducted a thorough check of the structure to ensure the fire had not spread further.

Although the fire was contained, officials said the home sustained significant damage due to the extent of fire travel within the chimney system. Fortunately, no occupants or firefighters were injured during the incident.

In the wake of the fire, the Smyrna Fire Department is reminding residents that unseasonably cold temperatures often lead to increased use of fireplaces and heating appliances. Fire officials urge homeowners to have chimneys, flues, and fireplaces inspected annually to help prevent similar incidents and reduce the risk of fire-related tragedies (See More Photos Below from Smyrna Fire & Rescue and the secondary map is from the Rutherford County Assessor of Property office).
