MURFREESBORO, TN (WGNS) - Winter weather has a way of reminding Middle Tennessee who’s in charge, and this latest round of snow and ice certainly made its point. Roads froze, schedules collapsed, and for the American Red Cross, something even more serious happened — blood donations came to a standstill.
Here in Murfreesboro, the Heart of Tennessee Chapter at 501 Memorial Blvd. is sounding the alarm. With donor turnout already low, the winter storms pushed the numbers even lower, leaving shelves bare at a time when hospitals are depending on every unit. Anyone able to donate is encouraged to call 1‑800‑RED‑CROSS (733‑2767) and schedule a time that works for them.
The Red Cross says the impact has been staggering. Since the start of the year, more than 500 blood drives have been canceled, wiping out over 20,000 expected blood and platelet donations. And it’s not just the drives — icy roads and dangerous conditions have slowed the transport of blood products, creating ripple effects for hospitals across the country.
Heart of Tennessee Chapter Executive Director John Mitchell told WGNS, "The strain is now being felt in operating rooms. Some hospitals have already begun postponing elective procedures because the blood simply isn’t there. When supplies drop to critical levels, trauma surgeons and emergency teams face the unthinkable: the possibility of running out during a crisis."
The Red Cross is asking donors to step up now. Blood and platelet appointments can be made through the Blood Donor App, at RedCrossBlood.org, or by calling 1‑800‑RED‑CROSS.
To help jump‑start the recovery, everyone who gives between Jan. 26 and Feb. 28, 2026, will receive a $20 e‑gift card to a merchant of their choice. Details are available at RedCrossBlood.org/Heart.
The Red Cross continues its broader mission — sheltering families after disasters, supplying nearly 40% of the nation’s blood, teaching lifesaving skills, and supporting military families. But right now, the need is immediate, local, and urgent. Murfreesboro donors can make a real difference simply by rolling up a sleeve.
