THP: Driver Injured After Two Freightliners Collide on I‑840 on Friday Night

WILSON COUNTY (WGNS) - The Tennessee Highway Patrol says one person was injured Friday (2/13/2026) night after a fiery two‑vehicle crash on Interstate 840 near mile marker 75, just inside Wilson County and only a short distance from the Rutherford County line. The wreck happened as traffic had slowed on the westbound lanes of the interstate, creating a backup that turned dangerous in an instant.

According to the trooper’s preliminary report, a Freightliner big rig was stopped in traffic when another Freightliner, driven by 46‑year‑old Joey S. Mofield, failed to stop and slammed into the rear of the first truck. The impact was strong enough to ignite Mofield’s tractor-trailer, sending flames into the night sky and prompting an immediate emergency response.

THP says Mofield was injured in the crash, though the extent of those injuries has not been released. The driver of the stopped truck was not hurt. Investigators noted that neither man is facing charges at this time, and the crash remains under investigation.

The fire charred debris left behind forced authorities to shut down I‑840 for several hours while troopers completed their investigation and crews worked to clear the roadway. Drivers in both Wilson and Rutherford counties felt the ripple effects, with long delays stretching well into the night.

The stretch of I‑840 near the county line is heavily traveled by commercial trucks, and Friday night’s crash is another reminder of how quickly conditions can change on the interstate. THP has not released additional details, but more information is expected as the investigation continues.
