RUTHERFORD COUNTY, TN - What started as a routine observation by Metro Nashville detectives quickly escalated into a fast-moving, multi-agency pursuit stretching from Hermitage into Rutherford County on Monday (2/16/2026). Detectives with MNPD’s Vehicle Crimes Unit first spotted a stolen Kia Optima traveling alongside a stolen Hyundai Sonata. Both vehicles were moving at high speeds, blowing through traffic signals, and even veering into oncoming lanes as they crossed into Rutherford County.
Metro Police immediately alerted surrounding agencies, and Smyrna Police officers positioned themselves along the route between Smyrna and La Vergne. As officers closed in, the two stolen cars split up — one heading toward Smyrna, the other doubling back toward La Vergne along Murfreesboro Road.
The Kia didn’t make it far. After a brief pursuit, the car became disabled and rolled to a stop near Joe’s Gas Station at Murfreesboro Road and Fergus Road. With help from a La Vergne Police K9 team, officers quickly took one 14-year-old into custody. A second 14-year-old tried to run but didn’t get far. He was found near the railroad tracks off Jefferson Pike. Both will face charges in Rutherford County.
Meanwhile, Smyrna officers intercepted the Hyundai and detained all five occupants — a 10-year-old, two 13-year-olds, a 14-year-old, and a 15-year-old. All five were charged in Juvenile Court with vehicle theft, and Metro Police note that additional Rutherford County charges are on the way. The Hyundai’s driver is also facing felony evading, felony theft, reckless endangerment, and misdemeanor evading.
Smyrna Police emphasized how critical teamwork was in bringing the situation under control. In a statement, the department said the arrests highlight “how collaboration allows us to act quickly and effectively to protect our community.
