MURFREESBORO, Tenn. (WGNS) - A mechanical failure in a heating and cooling unit forced the emergency evacuation of Mitchell-Neilson Elementary School on Wednesday afternoon.
The incident began shortly after 2 p.m. when thick smoke began filling the campus library. School officials acted immediately, transitioning students and faculty out of the building to ensure everyone's safety. While the campus was cleared, administrators eventually moved the students to a secondary onsite location to shield them from the elements.

Upon arrival, Murfreesboro Fire Rescue Department personnel traced the source of the haze to the roof. Firefighters identified a malfunctioning HVAC unit and discovered that the smoke resumed whenever the system was cycled on. The unit was subsequently shut down to prevent further issues.
The response was a multi-agency effort, involving nearly a dozen units including Rescue 1 and 4, Ladders 1, 4, 6, and 8, along with Engines 3 and 7. Safety officers and Battalion Chiefs also remained on-site to oversee the scene and ensure the building was clear of hazards before concluding operations.
No injuries were reported.
