Sean Gilliland, a longtime Rutherford County resident and community leader, has announced his candidacy for Rutherford County Commission, District 17.

“I’m running because I believe Rutherford County needs thoughtful leadership that listens to citizens, cares about our neighbors, plans for the future, and stays focused on the work that matters most,” Gilliland said. “Our county is growing fast, and we need smart, steady decision-making to protect our quality of life.”

Gilliland has called Rutherford County home since 1994. He and his wife, Anne, live in the Scottland Acres community, where they have built their lives around service, faith, and civic engagement. Their daughter, Molly, was educated in Murfreesboro City Schools, Rutherford County Schools, and later graduated from Middle Tennessee State University—reflecting the family’s deep roots in local public education.

Professionally, Gilliland brings decades of public service and leadership experience. He has served for 15 years as Chief Information Officer for Primary Care and Hope Clinic, helping guide a vital community health organization through growth and change. Prior to that, he spent 15 years as a Field Representative for U.S. Congressman Bart Gordon, working directly with constituents to solve problems and navigate federal services. Gilliland has also been deeply involved in community and faith-based leadership. He is an active member of St. Mark’s United Methodist Church, where he has served as Chair of the Administrative Board, on the Sanctuary Building Committee and Stewardship Committee, and as a worship leader. His civic involvement includes service on the boards of the Murfreesboro Youth Orchestra, Journeys in Community Living, Leadership Rutherford, and the Wesley Foundation at MTSU.

For nearly two decades, Gilliland served on the board of Main Street Murfreesboro, including two terms as Board Chair and service as Treasurer. In recognition of his long-standing commitment to downtown revitalization and responsible community development, he was awarded the Doug Young Downtown Leadership Award in 2024.

As County Commissioner, Gilliland says his priorities will be clear and focused: opposing the expansion of the Middle Point Landfill, ensuring Rutherford County has a realistic and responsible long-term plan for solid waste, pursuing smarter and more sustainable growth strategies, and returning the County Commission’s attention to the core business of serving residents effectively and transparently.

Gilliland is running to represent District 17 and bring experience, integrity, and community-centered leadership to the Rutherford County Commission.
