Dumonta Lamont Burns, 24

MURFREESBORO, TN (WGNS) - 24-Year‑old Dumonta Lamont Burns is now behind bars after turning himself in at court Tuesday morning, ending a nearly two‑week search tied to a Feb. 1 shooting on Sulphur Springs Road. Authorities say Burns appeared in court for an unrelated matter when deputies served him with multiple outstanding warrants, including attempted first‑degree murder, two counts of aggravated assault, reckless endangerment, and failure to appear.

Rutherford County Sheriff’s Office deputies immediately took him into custody.

Investigators say the charges stem from a shooting that occured early on a snowy Sunday early‑morning (2/1/2026), when a man was wounded during what detectives describe as a continuation of a past family dispute. The incident unfolded on Sulphur Springs Road, where Murfreesboro Police officers responded just before dawn. The victim survived, and detectives have been working the case since.

Burns had been the subject of a public search, with police asking for tips earlier this month. Instead, he walked into court on his own—only to be met by deputies waiting with warrants in hand.

He is now being held at the Rutherford County Adult Detention Center on a $300,000 bond. His next hearing is scheduled for March 9 in Rutherford County General Sessions Court.
