La VERGNE, TN (WGNS) - The La Vergne Police Department added three new members to its ranks Thursday, Feb. 19, during a swearing‑in ceremony at City Hall. The event marked the official welcome of one emergency communications specialist and two patrol officers, each stepping into roles that carry significant responsibility in the city’s public‑safety network.
Amanda Best was sworn in as an emergency communications specialist, joining the team that answers 911 calls and coordinates responses around the clock. Patrol officers Jack Sugden‑Kundar and Derry Lomax also took the oath of office, formally beginning their service on the streets of La Vergne.
Police Chief Christopher Moews used the ceremony to spotlight the essential work dispatchers perform behind the scenes. He noted that emergency communications is one of the most demanding jobs in public safety, requiring calm decision‑making while juggling multiple incidents at once. He pointed to a recent pursuit handled by the department as an example of the professionalism and steady leadership dispatchers bring to high‑stress situations.
“To have somebody of your experience, caliber, and professionalism — we’re glad to have you,” Moews told Best.
Turning to the new patrol officers, the Chief spoke candidly about the realities of the profession. Law enforcement, he said, is a long‑term commitment that offers purpose and fulfillment but also demands resilience, accountability, and a strong moral compass. He encouraged both officers to stay grounded in the oath they had just taken and to carry integrity with them throughout their careers.
Moews also acknowledged the families and loved ones gathered in the room, reminding everyone that strong support systems are vital in a profession that can be both rewarding and challenging.
The ceremony wrapped up with the official oath of office and photos with family members, department leadership, and city officials — a moment marking not just the start of three careers, but the continuation of La Vergne’s investment in public safety.
